About this Item

pages 11 pages; Clear plastic cover, perfect bound; Edited from the notes compiled by the late Chaplain R.Quirk - Fine condition; This transcript was edited from the notes compiled by the late Chaplain R Quirk and shows the general history of Chaplaincy in Papua New Guinea Defence Force. It contains a list of ARA Chaplains who served in PNG, since the inception of what is now the PNGDF. It contains the early history: 1953-1959 of the Chaplaincy, whose regiment then consisted of one battalion. Murray Barracks, was a small HQ area, with a few small service units. Most of the Australian married personnel, from PIR, lived here also. 1959 was the year of Father Quirk's own enlistment in the Army, and 1966 was the year when the Army was able to acquire a third Chaplain. Taurama Barracks and Murray Barracks and Moem - 1959 - 66: This period and incidents were in his opinion, the beginning of the realisation that PNG needs Chaplaincy wise it would be quite different to those in the Forces in Australia. In 1966 - 69 it was a period of great development within the Force and of Chaplaincy generally. Worry over the developing Indonesian presence in West Irian and fear over a possible treat to PNG were factors in the Force build up. Other contents include: The establishment of the Senior Chaplains Conference, Mission to the army, Character guidance, character development courses, Chapels, and a report of 1969 - 1976 period.
