About this Item

Biography of a man (1832-1920) who was a paradox to his fellow Texans, a Republican in a solidly Democratic state, a financier in cattleman's country, a prohibitionist in the good-time town of San Antonio, he devoted his life to making money and then giving it all away to philanthropic causes. His best known benefaction is Brackenridge Park but mostly he donated to educational causes. Unusual copy, it is practically flawless, very tightly bound, hardly read, and in a dust jacket that has long been protected by a mylar sleeve which itself became rubbed and has been replaced, exposing a bright and clean surface without edgewear. Collectible first edition. Bookseller Inventory # 002667
