First or early edition of the German edition, translated by Marguerite Brettauer, "All Rights Reserved" at foot of title page, no Warne date code. 143 x 110 mm, 5 5/8 x 4¼ inches, red boards, lettered white in the early style, coloured onlay the same shape and size as the first English edition, (upright rectangle with rounded corners), colour illustrated endpapers, 85 pages including the blanks which are not numbered, page numbers in blue beneath colour plates, black on text pages. Printed in Roman not Gothic. Black and white vignette on title page, coloured frontispiece and 26 colour plates. No inscriptions. A Fine clean tight copy in very good clear glassine dustwrapper, not printed (2 small closed tears to lower edge of lower panel). The endpapers are shown in Linder in Figs. 8 and 9, first used in Johnny Townmouse in 1918 and still in use in 1941. Glassine dustwrappers were dropped and replaced with printed paper before the 1950s and Warne's date code starts to appear at the same time. On the upper cover the A in "MAUSCHEN" and "BEATRIX" has a special serif over the top as in the early editions but there is no 'dot' in the O of Potter.
