About this Item

Two large (17 " x ll.5") half-bound folios, cream calf over wine-colored, beveled boards with gilt debossed decorative design to fronts -- a gilt wreath surrounding title, and volume number. Leather spine, six inches of lovely calf wrapped around back of book, features contrasting maroon spine level, with gilt lettering and ornamentation. Each volume features a red, marker ribbon, sewn-in. Smudging, shelfwear, bumps grace the boards of this obviously heavily looked-at coffee-table beauty. A few tears and creases to preliminary pages. READING COPY, but VERY solidly bound, and, at 13 lbs before packaging, fairly heavy. This two-volume collection consists of eleven Gibson books: 1): Drawings; 2): Pictures of People; 3): London; 4) Sketches and Cartoons; 5): The Education of Mr. Pipp; 6): Americans; 7): A Widow and Her Friends; 8): The Social Ladder; 9): Eighty Drawings Including The Weaker Sex; 10): Everyday People; and 11): Our Neighbors. One flips the pages wherein Gibson has, in the main, richly depicted the elegant, obviously monied people - suggesting characters likely to be found in an Edith Wharton novel, revealing their concerns, social mores, foibles and preoccupations. Gibson was famous for his creation of "The Gibson Girl", called "an iconic representation of the beautiful and independent American woman at the turn of the 20th century." (Wikipedia), and published in all the major magazines of his day. Harper's Weekly, Scribner's, Collier's. Later on he became editor, then owner of Life Magazine. Bookseller Inventory # 72964
