About this Item

688pp, profusely illustrated in black and white. The Gilbert Collection was formed over four decades by the late Sir Arthur Gilbert; a Brit who moved to California in 1949. Attracted by its historical and decorative qualities, he first started to collect English silver, later graduating to Italian mosaics, Roman enamel mosaics, portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Many of these collections, such as this one were exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art - who hoped to receive them ultimately as donations. Today, they are instead found at London's newly restored Somerset House, where a sequence of seventeen galleries creates an impressive setting for a unique display of English and Continental treasures. Published in conjunction with a 1988 LACMA exhibition, this extravagant volume documents one hundred and seventy gold and silver objects of vertu from one of the most distinguished private collections of its kind. A pristine copy in the publisher's unprinted cardboard slipcase, as issued. About this title

Synopsis:

The Gilberts' earliest acquisitions of silver in the late 1960s were made with essentially decorative purposes in mind. By about 1970, however, the Gilberts had begun to develop a serious interest in the craftsmanship of the finest goldsmith's work. Typical of their first purchases are the replica of the Warwick Vase, a pair of entree dishes from the Norfolk Service, and the magnificent candelabrum centerpiece, all by the English goldsmith Paul Storr (1771 - 1844). These and other early acquisitions established the criteria that guided the formation of the collection through the state documents by William Ezelle Jones 1977 catalogue, the works being generally of outstanding quality and possessing, in Arthur Gilbert's express, a monumentality that reflected the grandeur of the style of life for which they were made. That this has continued to be a major element in the collection is illustrated by certain subsequent acquisitions, such as the astonishing Russian gates, the Lafayette vase, and the Indian howdah.
