Description:

Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-332 [333: colophon] [334-336: blank] [note: first and last leaves are blanks], title page printed in black and yellow, original decorated yellow cloth, spine panel stamped in red and black, running Borzoi stamped in red on rear panel, top edge stained red, bottom edge rough trimmed. First edition. GLADIATOR, the author's third published novel was, in fact, a re-write of "Titan," an allegorical fantasy which Knopf accepted for publication in the late spring of 1927 subject to its being completely re-written. However, Wylie wanted his first published novel to be a serious realistic work which would make a good impression on the critics, so he wrote and published HEAVY LADEN (1928) and BABES AND SUCKLINGS (1929), before reluctantly re-writing GLADIATOR. Published in March 1930, GLADIATOR sold a mere 2568 copies and Wylie terminated his contract with Knopf on the convenient grounds that the novel had not been given adequate promotion. One might conclude that Knopf's book sales were meager due to the simultaneous, or nearly so, publication of the complete novel in the March 1930 issue of THE BOOK LEAGUE MONTHLY. Wylie's novel is considered by some SF critics to be the prototype for the comic strip hero Superman. According to Sam Moskowitz (Explorers of the Infinite), the creators of Superman not only borrowed the central theme of GLADIATOR, but paraphrased some of the dialogue as well. "A novel about the growth to adulthood of a boy who is a physical (although not intellectual) 'superman.' It is the first important sympathetic superman story, but exhibits the customary pessimism regarding the prospect of the hero's eventual integration into the human world -- a pessimism set aside by the creators of the comic book Superman, who borrowed the novel's central notion." - Anatomy of Wonder (1987) 2-145. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 3-73; (1981) 2-129; and (2004) II-1294. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2446. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 834. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 236. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 888-93. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 213. Reginald 15691. Slight spine lean, light partial residue from old style asphaltic-edged dust jacket protector along bottom edges of endpapers, a nearly fine copy in about very good pictorial dust jacket with wear and small chips at corners, wear, fraying and shallow loss at upper spine end, fraying and shallow chipping at lower spine end, wear and shallow loss along bottom edge of rear panel, several small closed edge tears, and some internal tape mends at spine ends and along front flap fold. A nice example of a very scarce jacket. (#147337). Bookseller Inventory #
