About this title

Synopsis:

Clara Kettleson's The Golden Tread includes historic photographs, letters, sources, bibliography, and 240 pages of impressions and history of Theodore Kettleson in Alaska and western Canada. It tells of Theodore's heritage and his separation from family, friends and birthplace in Wisconsin and efforts to seek out for himself a better life through hardships and struggles in Alaska and British Columbia. These hard efforts led to his successful involvement in the early development of Rossland, British Columbia and Southeast Alaska at a time where and when few men dared to tread but the lure of the gold rush was strong. It is an intimate story of a man who fully enjoyed life's experiences which are entwined in the historical development of Alaska. It is written from the perspective of a pioneer on the Alaska scene. The book is organized into experiences bringing attention to his family background, his fosterage, prospecting for gold, and finally going to Alaska where he spent 55 years of his life. It is carefully written by his wife, Clara in memory of Theodore who left to her a narration of historical events that were recorded and researched.
