FIRST EDITION. Oblong 4to. 11 x 8.5 inches. 63 pp. Bound in original stiff card boards with cloth spine and pictorial front board, which has a small faint water-stain, not affecting the image. Decorated green endpapers. Extremities a little worn but otherwise a very good copy. Attractive 1897 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 32 chromolithograph plates, including title page, and by other drawings in text. The US born English illustrator, Florence Kate Upton (1872-1922) found inspiration for her Golliwogg books in penny wooden dolls and an old toy found in her attic. The thirteen Golliwogg adventures were published 1895-1909 and the verses were written by her mother, Bertha (1849-1912). Founded by Patrick Marrin's father George in 1946, Marrin's Bookshop has been based in its current Folkestone location since 1963. Patrick has worked in bookselling since 1970. As well as rare antiquarian books, maps and prints, the stock includes a wide range of literature, library sets, travel, history and illustrated books in all fields. We also offer a bookbinding and restoration service. Visitors to the shop are welcome and we exhibit at UK book fairs.
