His mother was remov ed by death ih his infanc but the step-mother to whom his nurture was afterwards confided, made him to know all the sweetness of a mother s love and the fidelity of a mother s devotion. No organic life could be closer than the life of spiritual affection with which she infolded her son. To him she was ever the mother of his memory and his love. In his later years he was wont to recall the impressions of her teaching and example, as having given him those views of moral obligation and of depend ence upon the grace of God, that were so happily com bined and illustrated in his personal experience.
