About this Item

First edition. With a frontispiece and nine large woodcut engravings by Edmund Dulac, and with engraved head- and tail-pieces throughout. 8vo, publisher's original tan cloth, the upper cover with gilt and black central design based on one of Dulac's woodcuts, and with gilt chain border, the spine with a green label framed and lettered in gilt, additional gilt lettering at the tail. 319 pp. A very nice copy, the cloth bright and in excellent preservation, internally clean and fresh, the edges gauffered as issued. AN UNUSUAL ENTRY IN THE DULAC OEUVRE. Dulac is always ranked among the great book illustrators of the 20th century. These woodcuts display a wonderful side of the artist's expertise. The book is very elusive in the original English issue and in fine condition. The author's most famous work (a fantasy of time and travel written as if it were an authentic 18th century narrative), is well suited to Dulac's oriental style made famous in such works as Sindbad and Kingdom of the Pearl. The green lacquer pavilion of the title is seemingly a portal between England and the Orient, although this is an Orient of unusual dimension in that no matter how far one journeys from the pavilion it is always close at hand. The work is also sometimes seen as a subtly satiric battle of the sexes. It is full of originality, rich prose and delightfully droll chapter headings. Bookseller Inventory # 25457
