Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card for 1921 First National Pictures release, USA. Pola Negri, Harry Ledtke, Leopold von Ledebur, dir: Ernst Lubitsch, UFA. This film was originally released as CARMEN in Germany in 1918. With the release of PASSION in the United States, Pola Negri and Ernst Lubitsch became the rage, and their other films were soon brought over, including this film, released as GYPSY BLOOD in 1921. Negri and Lubitsch themselves followed when they were invited in 1922 to establish their careers in Hollywood. There were various versions of this popular story, made popular by the Bizet opera and based on the Prosper Merimee novel. This film, which is extant, is a curiosity piece today in viewing the early career of the director and the establishing of Negri in her vamp character. Released at the very end of a most horrifying war, the German public ate up this entertainment. This is the tragic story of Don Jose (with the tag line "a love tale of old Spain") who falls under the spell of a gypsy girl who treats him with love and contempt and leads him to a path of destruction. Carmen (Pola Negri) appeals to Don Jose (Harry Liedtke) to free her. FINE. Bookseller Inventory #
