Recent ½ calf with original marbled boards and blind-tooled borders, spine in five compartments of raised gilt bands preserving original black morocco title label on three, endpapers renewed., Text in French.All sources agree that the plates drawn and engraved in this work are exceptionally well executed and highly desirable. Louis-Marie Lante, born in 1789, was a painter and illustrator. He remains known today for his elegant and refined depictions of women?s attire. George-Jaques Gatine (1773-1824) was a prominent French engraver, who worked primarily with Lante throughout his career. Both Lante and Gatine are considered to be important costume artists of the early 19th-century. , Size : 4to, Illustrated with 52 (of 70) hand-coloured copper engraved plates of different French women?s costumes from the 12th to 18th century. , References : Hiler 526; Colas I:1765; Brunet III:32., P.
