Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket Included

Small 4to. Blue cloth with silver lettering and decoration, dust jacket. 122pp. Line drawings. Near fine/near fine. Tight, handsome later printing of these essays about such disparate figures as William Bradford, Samuel Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Alvin York, John F. Kennedy and others -- with a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Dirksen, 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 1967 November 1. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman as chairman of the Illinois Sesquicentennial Commission. Fine. On "United States Senate" letterhead listing him as "Minority Leader," Dirksen tells his friend that "attached is some material which could be identified as 'Gallant Sons and Daughters of the Land of Lincoln.' I do not know precisely how you want to use this but in any event you can dispose it as you might see fit giving it an appropriate title and proper attribution." Signed simply "Everett" large and bold in blue ballpoint. Newman (1912-98) is best known as founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, and perhaps was trying to tie in Dirksen's new book with some Lincoln festivity. Bookseller Inventory # 36642
