About this Item

A reprint edition of John Masefield's classic book written in 1916. From the Heritage History: "This classic homage to the heroes of Gallipoli, written by one of Britain's most eminent poets, tells the story of one of the worst military disasters in Britain's history. It is written from a sympathetic point of view by a man who had given up a secure University position to help with the war efforts on the Western Front. The author had first hand knowledge of the campaign and was essentially present there as a war reporter. It was written only a year after the disastrous battle, while Britain was still embroiled the Great War and the wounds were still fresh." From Wikipedia: Masefield's book Gallipoli, "was an outstanding success, encouraging the British people and lifting them somewhat from the disappointment they had felt as a result of the Allied losses in the Dardanelles. Published when the terror of Gallipoli was fresh in people's minds, John Masefield described what the common soldier had endured in that dreadful campaign. His book was written a few months after the Allied withdrawal and is a classic. His masterly description of the campaign was one of the first to tell of the events that made ANZAC soldiers famous all over the world. Easy to read and understand, the book places the reader squarely in the trenches and in the minds of the military strategists." John Masefield later became a longtime poet laureate of England and is perhaps best remembered today for his poem "Sea Fever." This copy is a First Edition Reprint (1917). VG-Plus.
