About this Item

This "story of New Zealand's acclimatisation societies 1861-1990" follows the develoopment of acclimatisatiion societies (AC) in NZ folliowing a world-wide movement concerned with the selection, introduction and management of animals, fish, birds and plants. NZ is renowned for the exceptional quality of its trophy deer heads, trout and salmon and to a lesser extent, game birds. NZ is unique in that almost all the species hunted orf fished are exotic to the natural environment. It was only after large-scale European immigration occurred that wide-spread species introduction took place. Initially the new Eauropean residenst, missing the familiar birds and animals of their former homelands began to arranger the transfplant of plants animals, fish and birds. The formation of AS in NZ in the 1860s saw more considered introductions and the beginning of a movement that soon grew nationwide and contributed to the care, conservation and development of the various introduced and released species of animals, fish and fowl. The author, a noted biologist, has produced an excellent history of the AS movement, in which all aspects of the administration of the nation's wild-life is explored, including the problems of controlling the "pests" unwisely introduced and of the often opposing viewpoints of the AS movement and successive governments. His book can also be regarded as an account of the changes to the NZ wild-life environment that have take place since the advent of European settlement. Illustrated throughout with b/w photos, some maps, drawings, diagrams and document reproductions/cartoons etc. Colour pictorial/art covers are VG+ , ink gift inscription on half title, text block otherwise excellent.
