Synopsis: This religious biography of Mohandas Gandhi (also known as Mahatma or "great soul") examines the growth and elaboration of his conception of Hinduism, primarily based on the writings found in the 90 volumes of his Collected Works . The author studies the growth of his religious ideas while he was a young lawyer in South Africa, as well as the main points of his religious worldview, including his judgements of the ritual and social realities of Hinduism, his Advaitic creed, his understanding of religious authority, and his conception of religious pluralism and its relation to the universal religion which transcend Hinduism. Finally the author looks at the expressions of his philosophy of religion as deed: ashram attendance, prayers and vows, sexual control, fasting, non-violence and the duty of service.
