Description:

New York. 1963. Knopf. 1st American Edition. Previous Owner’s Bookplate In Front, Otherwise Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. 21. 309 pages. January 1963. hardcover. Jacket design by Hiram Ash. Jacket drawing by Sidonie Coryn. keywords:. inventory # 14518. FROM THE PUBLISHER - By bringing so vividly to life the stifling atmosphere of a wealthy, tradition-ridden Moslem family in Algeria, Gabrielle Estivals makes understandable the story of a girl, Zoubeida, who would risk everything to lead a full, unfettered life. The world of emerging new nations is full of such spirited young women, desperate to break out of the prison of their heritage. To grasp fully the extent of their hunger for freedom, one must first realize how formidable the walls are that bind them. For Zoubeida the worst of the obstacles lie not in the world outside but within the family itself. Her gentle father is progressive enough to send her to a French lycée, but her intractable older brother is outraged at any breach of tradition. The story of Zoubeida’s struggle in a time when Algeria’s background is so little understood might have been made melodramatic or shallowly sentimental. Instead, Gabrielle Estivals has infused it with such reality and such haunting revelations that Zoubeida and her family become a part of our experience, and we see in human terms many of the motivating forces in Algeria’s urge for independence. Most of all, however, Zoubeida’s story is one of those rare narratives in which the reader becomes personally involved—a novel of deep perception, conflicts, and compassion. Book Description Collins, London, 1963. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Translated from the French by Frances Partridge. Vividly, and often lyrically, the author draws a superb picture of the customs, rituals, strength and weakness of a society weighed down by it's own traditions. The novel is about an important Bensaidi family in a small Algerian town, whose daughter attends a French lycee. She adopts the life of her fellow French students, and begins to criticise her life at home, which is substantially different. This is the first edition in the English language. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. No foxing in this copy. Dust Jacket is in very good condition, without tears or chips or other damage. Dust Jacket price-clipped. Edges very slightly spotted or marked. Multiple copies available this title. Quantity Available: 4. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Category: Fiction; Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 16961. Seller Inventory # 16961
