Hertfordshire has the two original Garden Cities, Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City, and four of the post-war New Towns. As well as describing the growth of the Garden Cities from the orignal concept to the present day, this book looks at their influence on the new towns which followed.

About the Author:

Robert Beevers works in the field of social history and town planning and is the author of The Garden City Utopia. David Hall is the director of the Town and Country Planning Association and has held positions as president of the Habitat International Coalition, chairman of the council for the Urban Studies Centre, and a member of the council of the Royal Town Planning Institute. Michael Hebbert is a professor of town planning at the London School of Economics and is the editor of British Regionalism 1900-2000, The London Government Handbook, and Unfamiliar Territory. Mervyn Miller is an architect planner and planning consultant and is the executive secretary for the Hertfordshire Building Preservation Trust. He lectures extensively on the garden city movement. William Allen is an architect and city planner and was director of the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. He worked with Louis de Soissons on the Welwyn Garden City and in 1986 was awarded a Commander of the Order of
