About this Item

MANSFIELD, Katherine. The Garden Party and Other Stories. London: Verona Press, [1939]. Tall octavo, original green decorative paste-paper-covered boards, russet cloth spine label, uncut. $3200.Limited edition, number 401 of 1200 copies, of this selection of stories published from 1908 to 1922, with 16 delicate color lithographs (ten full-page) by French artist Marie Laurencin.Novelist Edna O Brien noted, "As a short story writer Katherine Mansfield is closely akin to Chekhov. Their sensitiveness of perception is similar, their grasp of significant detail, their sense of quiet pattern, and their insistence on the poetic quality of simple homely familiarities. Katherine Mansfield broke completely with the older tradition of English tale-telling. Her influence on her own generation, which has been great, has served to render it conscious of the possibility of the short story as an art form presenting life at an arrested moment" (DNB). French designer and portraitist Marie Laurencin, although surrounded in her formative years by Cubist painters, created her own style of "pale colors and clean form that characterize her works, many of which feature female forms" (Musée Marie Laurencin). Includes some of Mansfield s most important stories: "Prelude," "Bliss," "Miss Brill," "The Daughters of the Late Colonel," "The Doll s House," and the title story. Although printed in 1939, the book was not issued until 1947. Copies numbered 1-30 were signed by Laurencin. Without original dust jacket and slipcase. Minute rubbing to foot of spine only of paste-paper-covered boards. A fine copy. Bookseller Inventory # 70941
