About this Item

A narrow N-S band in front of the Rocky Mountains and that straddles the 49'th parallel is home to both Jack Frost and Johnny Chinook. Millarville (near Calgary) lies within this belt. The belt means temperature extremes - OFTEN at times when LEAST expected. These extremes require HARDY plant species. These 209 pages, incl. INDEX and order form, describe those plants - some native and many introduced. Read about choke cherries, dahlias, snapdragons, sedum and aspen. Sections on (garden) birds, tools, rockeries, flower arranging, and recipes as well. Book was written by a co-operative collection. Plenty of b/w drawings of the `HOW-TO' type. Also colour photos of neighbourhood successes - incl. the co-operative project at the church on Hwy. 67. Cond : Cover (card) is a wrap-around colour photo of a chinook arch - read `warm-winter-wind'. White coil up spine. Regional MAP on back of front cover. BINDING tight, colours bright, volume clean !! Very light cover wear - i.e.- v. light scratches. UNsoiled. No tears, names, creases nor folds. Giftable !! Quote (p. 131) : " . success with your orchard. The first is to choose varieties that are hardy enough to withstand our climate. The second is to plant them where they get some shelter from the prevailing winds. A good snow cover is a help in keeping the roots frozen. Mulching after freeze-up with leaves and clippings helps . .". Bookseller Inventory # 004046
