Book Description New York, London, Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1924. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A Note-book of Plans and Sketches. Translated from the French by Helen Morgenthau Fox. New York, London, Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1924. Large 4to. x + (2) + 237 + (1 blank)pp. Numerous engraved illustrations in text from plans and drawings by the author. Contemporary green cloth, gilt title on cover and spine, within dust wrapper, a little worn at edges, though well preserved; 2 edges untrimmed. The first English edition translated from the original French edition of 1920, and in similar format. J.C.N. Forestier (1861-1930) was the foremost landscape architect of his period in France; he worked with Adolphe Alphand from 1887 in the construction and restoration of the Paris parks following Haussmann’s rebuilding of the city; the famous ‘rosarie’ at Bagatelle is one of his best known and imitated creations. He was subsequently employed abroad (in Spain, North Africa, Florida and Latin America). The present beautifully illustrated work is a record of the gardens he made, many showing the growing influence in his art of the Islamic garden making extensive use of water especially in canals and fountains, and using shade-bearing trees, covered pergolas, tiled terraces and arched pavilions; appended are useful plant lists. Among named designs are those for Montjuich, Barcelona, the Maria-Luisa Park at Seville, the sumptuous formal gardens of the Hotel del Leon at Pedralves, those for the ‘Sultan’s’ Palace at Casablanca and several private commissions for smaller walled gardens; all are architectural in layout and structure; features include stone steps, terraces, balustrades, pergolas and niches which contrast with trees and plants carefully chosen for shape and effect (ie cypresses, plane trees, vines, standard rose bushes). A very good copy. Seller Inventory # ABE-8982602117
