About this Item

First U.S. edition. Cloth, 326 pps. with appendix section of notes on the poem. Translated from the Spanish by Walter Owen. Illustrated with drawings by Alberto Guiraldes. The first North American publication of this great narrative poem of Argentina. First set down in the 1870's, the work was sung around the campfires of the men about whom it was written and has ingrained itself into South American lieterature and folklore as Shakespeare has in the English-speaking world. A tight copy, cloth lightly faded at the spine and lightly spotted. In the rather scarce original dust jacket, price clipped, with some darkening to the spine and shallow chipping along the top edge and a chip to the upper spine near the front gutter edge. Very acceptable example indeed. Bookseller Inventory # E6140
