About this Item

Jakatera, pedoman besar Jong-Java, 1930. Illustrated. 336 pp. Orig. decorated cloth (traces of use, some stains and sellotape repairs, but in all still a reasonable copy). * Memorial volume commemorating the foundation of the Javanese cultural youth movement ans student club Jong Java ('Young Java') in 1915. Its members belonged to the better educated, progressive, and relatively wealthy part of Javanese society and thus would ferment the tendencies for independence that first became clear in the 1920's and 1930's and that, accelarated by the events of W.W. II, would lead to Indonesia's self-proclaimed in dependence in 1945. The book gives a history of the movement with contributions in Javanese, Malay and Dutch and is illustrated with numerous photo portraits of leading members as well as a portrait of Mangkunagoro VII and his wife. Very rare. Bookseller Inventory # 003136
