During the first period of Monakow's professional life he carried out important neuroanatomical investigations on the thalamocortical connections and established a morphological foundation for Munk's observations. Gehirnpathologie is one of the classics of nineteenth-century German neurology. In addition to the lucid text, it is well illustrated with numerous plates and tables and includes over 3,000 references to the literature. The Russian-born Monakow made many important contributions to neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. He became a naturalized Swiss subject in 1869, studied medicine in Zurich with Gudden and Hitzig, and studying under Wesphal, Oppenheim, Virchow, du Bois-Reymond, and Munk.
