About this Item

(Volume XLVII, No. 3). Small 4to. Stiff blue printed wrappers. Pp. 480-484. Very good. Wrappers slightly sunned. Not a disbound excerpt, but the seldom-seen separate offprint with printed wrappers -- and bearing a nice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Rawley, 1p, 8½" X 6¼", Sweet Briar, VA, 1954 January 31.Addressed to Pyetell. Near fine. On "Sweet Briar College" letterhead, the noted historian discusses a Civil War Round Table: "Since there is little chance that I shall be able to come to the Round Table meetings, I think I'll ask to be dropped from the dues-paying members. Life is pleasant here, and I am kept busy learning history." Large, bold "Jim Rawley" signature in blue fountain pen. Rawley (1916-2004) was a noted American historian who studied under Allan Nevins and David Donald at Columbia University, then taught at Sweet Briar College and University of Nebraska, where he authored many texts such as "Turning Points of the Civil War," "The Politics of Union," "The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade" and others. From the library of noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Bookseller Inventory # 27712
