About this Item

Tall 8vo. [40], 767, [1] pp. Over 1200 text illustrations, diagrams. Original three-quarter red polished calf over pebbled cloth, gilt lettering on front cover & spine (dampstaining & soiling to covers, edgewear, minor bowing to covers, wear to corners), still good reference copy with excellent interior. First edition of this exceptionally scarce California trade catalogue for the famed Hardware firm. This lavishly illustrated catalogue includes sections on Aluminum Ware; Hotel, restaurant and steamship ware; Tinners' trimmings and supplies; Dairy goods; Cast iron hollow ware; Cutlery; Stoves & fireplaces; Pumps and drilling equipment for oil and water; and much more. This firm was originally founded by James B. Stetson during the California Gold Rush in 1850, and by 1878 he consolidated his firm with another, and changed the name to Holbrook Merrill & Stetson. His interests in mechanics and manufacturing closely involved him with San Francisco's distinctive cable car industry and in 1888 he became president of the California Street Cable Railroad. The firm survived the great earthquake and fire in 1906, and continued to operate until 1950. No copies located in Worldcat. Bookseller Inventory # 47381
