Illustrated with Forty Copper-Plates, exhibiting all the Operations, Instruments, Bandages and Improvments, according the to Modern and Most Approved Practice. Translated from the Author's Last Edition, greatly improved. The Eighth Edition, Revised and Corrected." Personal bookplate. Bindings are worn, hinges cracked, front board loose on vol. II. Vol. I: xi, 456 pp., 18 folding plates; ink name and date (1833) on title page; 2 plates with a tiny hole. Vol. II: Plates 19 to 40, plate 40 torn along fold; 414 pp; scattered margin pencil marks. Some slight browning to some of the plates, light dampstaining to edges of some pages. According to Garrison and Morton, Heister, who was the founder of scientific surgery in Germany, introduced a spinal brace. His work was the most popular surgical book of the 18th century.
