Description:

Thick 4to. viii, 490 pp. Nearly 450 text diagrams, figures, photos, illustrations. Colour-illustrated stiff softcovers, cover art of giant aircraft worker with rivet gun looming over the desert working on aircraft (minor scuffing, some creasing to front cover, minor shelfwear), still VG copy, w/ sheet of pencil instructions laid-in. First edition of this exceedingly scarce, and invaluable repair manual for the B-25 Mitchell medium-range bomber, which first gained its famed reputation as the bomber used in the Doolittle Raid in April, 1942 on the Japanese mainland four months after Pearl Harbor. With nearly 10,000 built during the War, the various versions of the B-25 saw heavy service in the Pacific Theater, especially in the New Guinea, Burma, and island hopping campaigns. The introduction of extensive nose armament, plexiglas windows, and de-icing equipment allowed the Mitchell to be used in anti-shipping operations, strafing and bombing against isolated Japanese controlled islands, and was used heavily in ground-attack mode in the European theater with a longer range than the Douglas Havoc and Invader bombers. This manual was intended to offer detailed instructions on how to return heavily damaged bombers to service within a short amount of time, covering all of the structural components of the airplane, determining the extent of negligible damage, instructions for repairable war damage from shrapnel, gun fire, tank artillery, and anti-aircraft guns, including patching, minor repairs, complete splicing, and insertion splicing. Although this manual was intended primarily for use in the field, it includes all the necessary information to accomplish repairs at major repair depots (such as the design and assembly of repair jigs). Notice on the front cover noted that This document contains information affection the National Defense of the United States within the meaning of the Espionage Act. . . transmission or the revelation of its contents in any manner to any unauthorized person is prohibited.
