About this Item

A very nice copy of the first Gowans edition, first printing, a volume from the John Allan collection and with an Autograph Letter Signed (dated August 12, 1852) from the publisher, William Gowans, to John Allan pasted in and Allan's bookplate to the front pastedown. According the letter from Gowans to Allan, "I pronounce this the correct, the best, and by far the most desirable edition of the celebrated comedy that has ever been produced." He is probably correct on this point. This volume, according to information laid in, contains illustrations including "a beautiful impression of the scarce mezzotint protrait of the Countess of Eglinton by Dunkarton, a scratched proof; 13 plates engraved by David Allan, the "Scotish Hogarth", a beautiful stipple engraving in brown by Bartolozzi' and a similar one in carmine by Tomkins, both original and scarce." The past owner, John Allan, who died in November, 1863, was a noted book collector in New York City as is evident in this article from the New York Times dated April 23, 1864: "The sale of this remarkable collection will commence on Monday the 2d of May next, at the auction rooms of Messrs. BANGS, MERWIN & Co., in Broadway, and will most likely occupy the whole of the evenings of that and the succeeding week, as, in addition to the books, the catalogue includes the collection of engravings, autographs, mineral specimens, snuff boxes, old silver plate, china, paintings, and miscellaneous curiosities difficult to reduce to any special arrangement. All who knew the late Mr. ALLAN must regret the breaking up of this, one of the last remaining vestiges of old New-York, and will dwell with pleasure on the remembrance of the snug and cosy little house in Vandewater-street, a true Knickerbocker abode, crammed to overflowing with all sorts of literary and graphic treasures, now about to be ruthlessly dispersed by the fiat of the auctioneer." According to a penciled note laid into the book, the sale brought $38,000 in May of 1864. The publisher of this book, William Gowans, was also a noted New York book collector and bookseller. The letter from Gowans in this book notes that the editor, Peter Hastie, "[h]e read and compared twelve of what was considered the best of editions commencing with the original, and in doing so, he found that all the respective editors had copied each others errors. These of course he has corrected, and further has added one hundred and twenty three words to the glossary.". Now back to the book description: Full leather with gold gilt embellishments to both boards and spine and to the interior edges of the pastedowns. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Five raised bands with six compartments to spine. Another previous owners' bookplate (besides Allan's) to front pastedown. Some minor wear to spine ends at folds and corners o/w Fine. Not ex-lib. Not a Book Club Edition. This is a nice copy at a very good price. Compare and see. Photos sent upon request. Accurate Descriptions/Quality Books/Unmatched Prices. Bookseller Inventory # 8-SB
