About this Item

Volume 21, orig. half leather, marbled boards, no spine label, new end papers, reback some time ago, not well, all very worn. Insides with aged paper, some marking and spots. Page readable. Some plates missing. The complete year, Jan. to Dec. 1751. 612 pp, plus Index, Engraved frontispiece, and 5 architectural 4 heraldic, and two other plates. The original text, clean and readable in the original binding. PO bookplate on front end paper. Overall condition internally is good- January 1751. p.15-19; Peter Kalm's piece "A letter from Mr. Kalm, a gentleman of Sweden, now on his travels in America, to his friend in Philadelphia containing a particular account of the Grat (sp.) Falls." The plate, "View of the Niagara Cataract" is lacking. Kalm was the first person to scientifically describe Niagara Falls in English from first hand experience. This appearance in Gentleman's Magazine predates Kalm's full work, En Resa till Norra Amerika, which appeared in three volumes in Stockholm, 1753-1761, This publication of his comments places Kalm's visit to North America in a greater context of the world at that time and as well takes on more historical significance relative to the history of Niagara Falls.
