4to. [xvi], 359, pp., including errata and page of publisherís advertisements. With 4 text engravings. Contemporary calf, rebacked; minor marginal staining to first and last leaves, otherwise a very nice copy. First edition. This scarce treatise refutes Burnetís theory of the formation of the Earth, and contains an interesting explanation on the state of metals and minerals before the flood. "Warren [d. 1718] maintained that God created the Earth with its present form, and he defended the beauty of mountains against Burnetís diatribes. Getting into the scientific spirit, Warren even tried to show that there were mechanical problems with Burnetís hypothesis and that the Earth could not possibly dry and crack in the manner he advocated" (see Linda Hall Library, Theories of the Earth 1644-1830, 8). According to Woodard, this book contains the earliest published reference to geology in England. Bookseller Inventory #
