About this Item

"Georg Baselitz often refers to his childhood experience in the rural village of Deutschbaselitz outside Dresden, where he was born, Hans-Georg Kern, in 1938. He lived there until 1950 and in 1961 adopted Baselitz as his surname, perhaps to assume a unique professional identity that others might note, but surely also as a sign of his identification with his teritorial origin. Among the many stories he has told about his youth, one seems particularly relevant to the network of references enlisted by his new series of paintings, which couples Slavic folk motifs to images of the Baselitz family. This story is part of a contribution to a symposium in which Baselitz, on several different levels of understanding {biographical, political, professional, spiritual}, describes the impoverished conditions of his generation, who lacked 'established hierarchies' of social and cultural authority as they came of age in postwar Germany." {Richard Shiff}. This book has 36 pages and is profusely illustrated. Bookseller Inventory # 059284
