About this Item

First edition identified by the lack of any mention of later printings, as per publisher's statement. Dated 2-13-82, inscribed (with cartoon of an outfield fence and lights shining for a night game) and signed "John Garrity" to the FFE. Rub and a small closed tear to DJ corners. George Brett showed neither early determination nor great talent -- he hit .300 in the minors and did not make a great impression on pro scouts. He wasn't even the best player in his family. So how did this same lackadaisical kid become the All-Star Kansas City Royals third baseman who cleared the bases with an eighth-inning double on Aug. 17, 1980, that pushed his batting average to an "impossible" .401? How did he clinch the Royals' first pennant with a dramatic homer in Yankee Stadium (off Goose Gossage), finishing the season with a .390 average, and drawing widespread acclaim as the greatest player of his era? Photos -- probably shot in color -- here unimpressively reproduced (sorry) in B&W on matte stock. 248 pp. Reduced from $35. Bookseller Inventory # 004402
