About this Item

Published 1747, with small date on engraving 1745. Hand colored engraving by English naturalist and ornithologist George Edwards. Plate mark measures 7.5 x 9.25 inches on 9 x 11.5 inch sheet. Print is in near fine condition rich coloring. One of only two quadripedes included in part II of "A Natural History of Birds. The most of which have not hitherto been either figured or described, and the rest, by reason of obscure, or too brief descriptions without figures, or of figures very ill designed, are hitherto but little known.". Though Edwards was not a professional artist, he was painstaking in his representations of the stuffed animals which he used for reference. He examined and sketched them from many angles to achieve a life-like presentation. His depictions are often unique in setting the subject in space, often including trees, insects, shrubbery, or other environmental details. Edwards hand-colored at least a dozen copies of each of the etchings he published, and personally supervised the coloring of others. Bookseller Inventory # z04080
