About this Item

This is #214 of 300 copies signed by George Gershwin and the illustrator Constantin Alajalov. A very handsome copy of this first signed/limited edition, illustrated with Alajalov's dazzling Hirschfeld-like color illustrations of Gershwin's syncopated jazz world. Very good plus in the publisher's full Moroccan leather which is stamped brightly on the front boards in large capital gold letters and on the spine in smaller gold capital letters with art deco rules along the edges. A strikingly, lovely production. Each of the 18 published songs in the text is preceded by a luminous color plate by Alajalov. For example: "Swanee," "Do it Again," "Sweet and Low Down," Fascinating Rhythm," "I Got Rhythm," "The Man I Love" and many other favorites. Also included are Gershwin's original piano solos for each piece. The special sheet music for "Mischa, Yascha, Toscha, Sascha" by George Gershwin with words by Arthur Francis is present in the rear moire pocket. A truly wonderful volume. Bound in full Moroccan leather with bright gilt stamping, the binding is lightly edgeworn with heavy wear to the corners and along the front hinge spine joint. The hinges are solid because of the blue linen interior hinges, while the leather is separated along the front outside joint. There is also rubbing and heavy wear to the top and bottom of the spine ends which have been abraded at the tips. The top edges are gilded, and there is light shelfwear along the bottom edges. Internally, the book is very good plus, clean and tight. With a previous owner's name in pencil on the front endpaper. Overall, a very handsome copy of this musical and artistic collaboration, featuring many of Gershwin's masterpieces. Signed by George Gershwin & Alajalov. Bookseller Inventory # 67
