About this Item

Brand New Book - still in publishers shrink wrap. George W. Jones (1860-1942) was one of the most respected and celebrated fine printers of his generation. This book is the first extensive review of his life and work and fills an important gap in the literature of graphic design and printing history. Jones entered the printing industry as an apprentice in 1873 and by 1889 was an independent printer and publisher in London. He was an early user of the Linotype composing machine and a vanguard exponent of trichromatic halftone letterpress printing, producing the first British book to be illustrated by this process. In 1911 Jones established the enterprise known famously as the Sign of the Dolphin. Books were produced for such notable publishers as the Nonesuch Press and the Limited Editions Club. Jones was appointed printing adviser to the British arm of the Linotype organization in 1921. He was directly responsible for the creation of several distinguished typefaces including Granjon, Estienne and Georgian. , 8vo 8" - 9" tall, 128 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 3812
