Synopsis: For Gerhard Richter, creating intimate works on paper enables him to establish a reflective distance from his painterly oeuvre. It is not coincidental that there is an increased output of watercolors precisely when Richter's painterly work shifts directions. For example, when Richter began to paint abstract pictures and experiment with different themes, we see during this period the appearance of his first abstract watercolors, a different scale and medium that provides a base from which his larger paintings can play off of, and vice versa. This book includes over 100 color reproductions of these paintings, as well as a discussion between the artist and Dieter Schwartz examining the thematics of his work.

About the Author: Born in Dresden in 1932, Gerhard Richter immigrated to West Germany in 1961 and had his first one-man show in 1970. His work has been seen by American audiences at major museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Walker Art Center; the Dallas Museum of Art; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
