About this Item

A collection of six (6) original albumen prints produced in Hamburg in the mid 1860s or 1870s by the photography studio E. Hattorff. Six matching images, mounted on card. Each measuring 4 x 2 1/2 inches (approx). Scarce and curious collection of hand-colored costume photographs, depicting a Milkman (Milchmann), Milkmaids (Milchmadchen), two images flower-seller girls from Vierlande, Hamburg (Vierlanderin) in National costumer, a Nurse (Amme), and a Chambermaid or Servant Girl (Dienstmadchen). On the verso of each image is the elaborately ornamented name and address of the photographic studio: "Aus dem photographischen Atelier von E. HATTORFF, Neust. Fuhlenwiete No. 56, Atelier im Garten. HAMBURG." Hattorff Studio is best remembered as the photographer of the Belle Coola troupe of Native American Indians who were brought to Germany by Norwegian brothers Capt. J. Adrian Adrian and Fillip B. Jacobsen, in 1885. We are unable to explain how these 6 cards did not perish at some point during the last 150 years. Bookseller Inventory # 13
