About this Item

Description:

Original publisher's brown cloth binding with gilt title to spine. A few small marks to boards. Spine faded and has slight wear to ends, 3.5cm split to head of spine with old glue repair. Some foxing to plates and facing pages, a few occasional spots and light marks elsewhere. Binding strained in a couple of places and a few gatherings are slightly protruding from the page block, however the book remains securely bound. A very early English language edition of Grimms' Fairy Tales, this is their first collection, originally translated into English in 1823. The engraved title page and 11 plates, by Cruikshank, are all present and correct. A highly desirable early example of what is widely considered to be the world's first illustrated children's book. Contains the following tales: Hans in Luck; The Travelling Musicians, or the Waits of Bremen (The Town Musicians of Bremen); The Golden Bird; The Fisherman and his Wife; The Tom-Tit and the Bear (The Willow-Wren and the Bear); The Twelve Dancing Princesses; Rose-Bud (Briar Rose/Sleeping Beauty); Tom Thumb (Thumbling); The Grateful Beasts; Jorinda and Jorindel (Jorinda and Joringel); The Waggish Musician (The Wonderful Musician/Strange Musician/Marvellous Musician); The Queen Bee; The Dog and the Sparrow; Frederick and Catherine; The Three Lucky Ones (The Three Children of Fortune/Three Sons of Fortune); King Grisly-Beard (King Thrushbeard); Chanticleer and Partlet; Snow-Drop (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs); The Elves and the Shoemaker; The Turnip; Old Sultan; The Lady and the Lion (The Singing, Springing Lark [Beauty and the Beast variant]); The Jew in the Bush (The Jew Among Thorns); The King of the Golden Mountain; The Golden Goose; Mrs. Fox (The Wedding of Mrs. Fox); Hansel and Grettel (Hansel and Gretel); The Giant with the Three Golden Hairs (The Devil With the Three Golden Hairs); The Frog-Prince; The Fox and the Horse; Rumpel Stilts-Kin (Rumpelstiltskin). Overall condition is Very Good. Size: 4.25 x 7.25 inches (11 x 18 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: 12mo. xii, 240. Seller Inventory # 1234E073
