1st Unexpurgated Edition (Limited Edition of 300 copies, with Introduction by Dr. Robert T. Foley), xxx+261pp., portrait frontis. (of the author), 343pp., 24 maps. Fine copy in dw & slipcase. Tom Donovan Editions. 2008. A most important & thought-provoking study of German defensive tactics on the Western Front, based partly on research in German sources & refuting some of the basis of the British Official History. The author, a regular officer who had the misfortune to be captured at Le Cateau in 1914, later joined the team that compiled the British Official History (he had used his time in PoW camps to perfect his German and was one of the few who could properly utilise German sources), but during the 1930s his views increasingly diverged from those of Sir James Edmonds and he insisted that his name be removed from the title page of the controversial "Passchendaele" volume. In this book he examines and describes the 1915 battles of Neuve Chapelle, Aubers, Festubert & Loos and the development of the Germans' tactical concept of the "Defence in Depth," then moves on to the Somme 1916, Vimy Ridge, Battle of Arras 1917 (including fascinating material on the fighting around Monchy-le-Preux), Messines and the Third Battle of Ypres. The 1st Edition of this book, published in 1940, was a substantially diluted version of Wynne's argument: the publishers, Faber and Faber, pulped an entire edition and only issued a bowdlerised version. Through the assistance of the Wynne family Tom Donovan Editions has published the full and unexpurgated text for the first time, including all the matter removed in 1940 plus the author's additions and amendments for any further editions. Limited edition of 300 copies, high quality sewn casebound edition with specially commissioned dustjacket and slipcase. For more details, and pictures, see Tom Donovan Editions website.
