In 1324 Jewish merchants are documented, but in 1492, 27 Jews were accused of a Blood libel and the community disappeared from Schwerin. Only in the midst of the 17th Century did Jews start to resettle in Mecklenburg and they were restricted to certain areas. One of the first activities of the community was in 1717 to buy a piece of land ?Am Heidensee" to create a cemetery, which was used until 1940. In the midst of the 18th century 30 families lived here, but had to pay high taxes for the privilege and to be protected. They were known for their silver productionand the Jewish population became wealthy. In 1773 the synagogue was inaugurated and houses for the Rabbi and the cantor were built around it. In its inception the congregation in Mecklenburg had 100 members, (18 of which were in Schwerin). After the seond wolrd war In 1956, there were 36 members were land by the end of the 1980's only three members remained. Since the immigration of Jews from the former Soviet Union the numbers have increased to ca 1.000 persons, which makes this congregation one of the strongest in the new federal states of Germany. The flourishing of the Jewish congregation required a new synagogue, which was inaugurated on Dec. 3rd, 2008 at the place of the synagogue which had been destroyed by the Nazis. The new building integrated the remainders of the destroyed synagogue, while representing new beginnings for Jewish life in Schwerin. (www.jüdische-gemeinden.de). Text in Hebrew and German.
