About this Item

First Impression. Small 8vo; 224pp. Publisher's green cloth, the spine lettered in black; in the correct illustrated dust jacket with a publisher's 2 sticker over the original 1 price. A nearly pristine copy, apparently unread and seemingly without fault. A superb copy of the author's fifth book. Born in Cologne, in 1927, into a middle-class German-Jewish family, Ruth Prawer studied literature in London, where she met and married Cyrus Jhabvala, an Indian student. At age 24, she moved with him to India, and her delight in the country is reflected in her early novels. "But later, following a trip back to Europe in 1960 . . . Jhabvala's vision of India took a darker turn in Get Ready for Battle (1962), in which, in the last of her novels to deal chiefly with Indian characters, she confronts India's staggering social problems. This novel, and the collection of stories which followed it, Like Birds, Like Fishes (1963), marks the end of what might usefully be seen as the first phase of Jhabvala's fiction writing."
