Bos: Published for the Editor, 1876, 1st. edition, 485 pp. *** The sub-title is as follows Illustrated in a Series of Autobiographical Sketches. *** By the author of Art Magic, with Extracts from the Records of Magical Seances, Etc. Etc. Britten began her journey into the metaphysical in England, where she was a member of a secret occult society in London. She emigrated to the U.S. where she became a writer, orator, and practitioner in the early Modern Spiritualist Movement. She was one of the six founders of the Theosophical Society, which she later left after a disagreement with Helena Blavatsky. *** This book was part of a collection of books on spiritualism from a small colony of spiritualists at Temple Heights, in Northport, Maine. *** This book comes with a clear mylar protective cover. *** Bound in ¾ black calf and cloth boards simulating morocco. Gilt lettering on the spine is about half gone. The covers are clean with moderate wear, one corner bumped. The leather has numerous small gouges, probably from long departed silverfish. The leather of the front joint is split with the joint still holding OK. The back joint is starting at the bottom. The contents are clean and complete in a good binding. The title page is chipped, and has been backed by a blank sheet of paper. Front is bight but spine is darkened. 357 pages plus ads. This book was printed on poor quality paper so copies are typically darkened, as with this book. Decorated end pages, front pastedown has 19th century bookplate in corner and hinge cracked. This hinge crack is why condition was degraded from VG to G+. No handwriting noted, not ex-lib.
