Kilmainham Jail received its first political prisoners in 1796. Among the earliest was Henry Joy McCracken. In the 1922-23 Civil War it once more became the scene of executions when four soldiers of the anti-Treaty forces were shot there on 17th November 1922 - James Fisher, Peter Cassidy, John Gaffney and Richard Twohig.
