About this Item

The special presentation edition, bound in finely woven tan cloth with impressionistic cloud designs in soft colors, especially on the rear panel. The delicate colors on the front boards have faded away. With a paper label on the spine: title and author and presentation edition, autographed. On the limitation page: "This Presentation Edition of Giants in the Earth is limited to one hundred copies signed by the author of which this is number 13. Signed brightly in blue ink "O.E. Rolvaag." The binding is worn, faded and lightly shaken. Internally very good and clean. "In his novels, Rölvaag was primarily concerned with the theme of immigration, which he explored in his largely autobiographical Letters from America (1912) and The Boat of Longing (1921). He took a one-year leave of absence from St. Olaf College and lived in lonely cabin in Minnesota to write the epic that would become Giants in the Earth. He originally wrote all his novels in Norwegian and then helped translate them into English. Two novels, I de dage (In Those Days) and Riket grundlaeges (The Kingdom Is Founded) were first published in Norway in 1924 and 1925. They were then translated into English and published in the United States in one volume, Giants in the Earth (1927)." (Spark Notes) Worn with light vertical crease to spine Presentation Edition, Stated "First Edition" and "Autographed". Bookseller Inventory # 29
