Top left corner of title page has a very small rubber stamp impression in Hebrew of the former owner, Professor Milton (Michael) Arfa, the distinguished Rabbi, author and professor of Hebrew literature and philosophy. Dr. Arfa taught generations of students at Yeshiva University, Herzliah Hebrew Teachers Institute, Hunter College, HUC-JIR and NYU. As chairman of the Israel Matz Foundation, Dr. Arfa devoted himself to aiding indigent Hebrew writers, and published scholarly works of Hebrew literature and philosophy. He was a gifted teacher, humanitarian, scholar, lover of Zion and above all a modest and quiet doer of good deeds. Benjamin Hameiri (1935-1956) (Meirovitch), was born on Dec. 20, 1935, in Jerusalem, the year his parents immigrated to Israel from Czechoslovakia. He studied at the Tachhkemoni Elementary School in Jerusalem and Beit Hakerem High School and was able to complete one year at the Hebrew University before he was killed. From childhood he was a member of the United Movement and became a guide. He was drafted into the IDF (July 1953), serving in a combat unit. He devoted himself to restoring the abandoned Neveh Ilan as a branch of the Green Village. His main occupation was writing articles on various issues, poems, stories. He was beloved and respected by everyone for his integrity, talent and gentleness. He and his fiancee planned to marry right after his short military reserve service, but on September 10, 1956, while during military training as a reservist near the ruins of Al-Dawayima, the Arab Legion (Jordan's military), situated on an overlooking hill across the border, fired at them with mortars and machine guns killing six Israeli soldiers, with a seventh dying of his wounds a few days later. When the survivors retreated, the Jordanians crossed the border, dragged the bodies to their side of the border and, in their time honored tradition, they desecrated the bodies. Most of those killed, including Benyamin Hameiri, were students at the Hebrew University. The Jordanians claimed they opened fire because the Israelis crossed the border but even the Armistice committee, part of the United Nations, a sewer overrun by Anti-semites, concluded that the Jordanian version was false.
