About this Item

Hemispheric map of the Eastern and Western hemispheres, with an inset of Australia as a color key- "NB The British Dominions are colored thus." Supplementary information in the margins such as Mountains, Altitudes, Principal Rivers for each hemisphere. The Australian states are divided into West Australia, South Australia, Tasmania or Van Diemen's Land & North Australia. The northern border of South Australia extends all the way to the East coast, above Moreton Bay, thus forming the New South Wales northern boundary. Below New South Wales is Australia Felix, with an overprint of "Victoria". However, there is no discernable border. The State Library of Queensland holds an 1839 edition (Libraries Aus ID 22857310), but this 1850 edition does not appear on Trove. The Antarctic is outlined with numerous red strip for British expeditions that have touched its coast, and titled "Part of the Supposed Antarctic Continent."Lithograph with hand color, map on thick paper, linen backed, original dissected folds, attractive outline color, 37 x 22 1/2", folds to 7 1/2 x 4 3/4". British dominions colored red. Map has much light foxing all over, two corners lifting from linen on eastern side, one map square corner folded (over Hungary). Very legible & decorative. One listed on OCLC: 558022750 at British Library; not found on Trove. Bookseller Inventory # 21980
