Giordano Bruno, living in the late 1500's, was a stormy character- at once pleasing and pissing-off people and courtly personalities wherever he went. He was a man of intense vision, and unafraid to speak his mind. He wrote on the nature of the universe and was quite home with the ideas of the "infinite", which of course infuriated the church. He ended up burning at the stake for heresy. Later research by the scholar, Francis Yates also shows how Bruno was connected to the Western Hermetic Tradition. Dorothea Waley Singer, the authoress, was Vice-President of the History of Science Society, in the United States. She offers in this book, a Annotated Translation of Bruno's "On the Infinite Universe and Worlds". A classic in the history of science and Renaissance thought. Seller Inventory # 1820

Book Description New York: Henry Schuman, 1950, 1950. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt and green. With the dust jacket. Spine lettering a little faded and ends bruised, otherwise a bright, clean copy in the worn and marked dust jacket, a few paper and tape repairs to verso, price sticker to front flap. Frontispiece and 14 full page illustrations. First edition, first printing, of this biography of the Copernican Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), one of the great "martyrs of science", with an English translation of his greatest contribution to scientific and philosophical thought. Both Dorothea Waley Singer (1882-1964) and her husband Charles Singer were historians of medicine; Dorothea's study of pre-Renaissance scientific manuscripts at the British Museum brought to light over 30,000 manuscripts in the UK relating to science and medicine, which resulted in the Singer Collection at the British Library.
