Synopsis: The provincial newspaper columns were the "public spheres" of their time, places for geographically separated individuals to contribute opinions to the debates of an immature democracy. But equally they were the vehicles for the passionately held views of bigots egged on by unscrupulous editors eager for exciting copy. These letters from Colenso, and their replies, show colonial politics to be argumentative, fervent and nasty – and the rants of opinionated, self-styled experts are thrilling in their vehemence.

About the Author: Ian St George is a retired general practitioner. He came to Colenso studies through his interest in native orchids. He has edited a collection of Colenso’s letters to the editor entitled Give your Thoughts Life and Colenso’s Collections. He is editor of eColenso, the newsletter of the Colenso Society.

Book Description Otago University Press, New Zealand, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. . .you have the Press, both open and free: use it. Give your thoughts life; let all good measures be brought forward, discussed, and well ventilated. - William Colenso, writing to the Hawkes Bay Herald correspondence columns in 1859 *** William Colenso (1811-1899) was a Cornish Christian missionary to New Zealand. He was also a printer, a botanist, an explorer, and a politician. Colenso had an educated opinion on everything, and he expressed his opinions in letters to the editors of several New Zealand newspapers. The provincial newspaper columns were the public spheres of their time - places for geographically separated individuals to contribute opinions to the debates of an immature democracy. But, equally, they were the vehicles for the passionately held views of bigots egged on by unscrupulous editors eager for exciting copy. Many of Colenso s public letters were answers to - or were met by - equally forthright editorials or published letters from contemporaries. Colonial politics were argumentative, fervent, destructive, and nasty - and the rants of opinionated, self-styled experts were thrilling in their vehemence. Give Your Thoughts Life contains a fascinating and entertaining collection of William Colenso s newspaper letters. Seller Inventory # AAG9781877578144

Book Description Otago University Press (2011), Dunedin, 2011. Softcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. No signatures.; 497pages. Page dimensions: 230 x 154mm. "In his more than 200 letters to editors, Colenso wrote mostly for local Hawke's Bay readers. But he was a national celebrity for his opinions, as the clippings from papers outside the Bay scattered through this collection and his widely published obituary notices demonstrate. One correspondent to the Wanganui Herald in January 1882, similarly sympathetic to the plight of Maori, tellingly signed himself, 'COLENSO'S GHOST.' The letters reproduced in this book are all that can be found at present. As well, some other newspaper items have been included if they threw light on the more obscure letters." Table of Contents: Introduction; Letters 1847-1859; Letters 1860-1869; Letters 1870-1879; Letters 1880-1889; Letters 1890-1898; The Final Chapter; Index of Letters. Seller Inventory # 18209
