About this Item

Wonderful Peto Art Deco illustrations. Quarter beige cloth with titling and fairy illustrations in black on the spine, which is a little 'bumped' to the head/tail of the spine, and has a little light rubbing, but overall the decoration/lettering is pretty black, clear and readable. The rear board is plain cream paper board and a little browned/marked. The front cover is a decorated paper board with a cream base black blocked cream titling, black decoration, lettering, and more fairies decorating an upside down 'L' shaped section with the remainder of the front cover consisting of a pasted-on, black bordered full colour Peto illustration of two children in a street in front of a toy store window. Delightful! . The Extremities of the boards are slightly rubbed/chipped, with some browning/foxing and marks to the cream based paper covers. But unusually for this type of fragile publication the boards are pretty good, and the book is now preserved in a clear plastic cover. Unpaginated, with black and white Peto decorated pictorial endpapers. 7 full page Peto colour plates (as listed) , 37 Peto black & white illustrations - many full page. The first plate has been re-inserted (the wrong way round) at some time in the past, leaving one edge of this plate a little discoloured at the tips and slightly chipped, but nothing that affects the illustration. Consisting of 18 stories by C. Lindsay Emmerson, K. L. Murray, Gladys Peto, Sheila Kaye-Smtih, Annie Pearce, Margery Maitland, Gilbert Frankau, Berta Ruck and Arthur Oliver, Sewell Stokes, Christine Jope-Slade, G. B. Stern, and Constance Emmerson. Foxing spots to all the page fore-edges. Internally some scattered light foxing throughout, but more to the prelims. A little 'offsetting' on a couple of the b/w illustrations. A gift note to a former owner on the reverse of the ffep, dated 1924. Also enclosed is a loose 'stand up' 'cut out' head and shoulders in colour of ? 'The (Younger) Prince of Wales'? , which was a gift with 'Schoolgirls Own'. This has been there a long time as it has left a light brown sillhouette on the pages. NO colouring in or other marks. Overall this is a pretty clean and tight copy, of a very scarce title with the most delightful period illustrations throughout by Gladys Peto. See Images. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall.
